Calling of the Directions for September 16, 2001

Will you face the East.

We look to the east and the see the smoke rising from ruined buildings, hear the cries of the wounded and the sobbing of those who have lost loved ones. In this time of tragedy and suffering, may God's cleansing wind clear both the air and our minds. As a nation, let us go forward with calmness and rationality.

Will you face the South.

We look to the south and see those with brown skin, people of many cultures who live beside us and among us. As the fire of anger burns bright in the hearts of Americans, may that fire not be turned against our innocent neighbors, whatever their religion or skin color. As a nation, let our anger become the resolve to seek justice, and the dedication to rebuild.

Will you face the West.

We look to the west and see the memory of Pearl Harbor and the echo of old fears, though in a different time and circumstance. As we are tossed about the tides of emotion -- loss, grief, insecurity, and pain -- may God's love flow through us and bring healing. As a nation, let us mourn deeply and sincerely, and keep the memory of our lost ones alive.

Will you face the North.

We look to the north and see planes recently grounded, travellers stranded, people separated from their loved ones, alone and afraid. As we remember this week's strangely empty sky, may the stability of God's earth under our feet give us the strength to endure. As a nation, let us comfort those who are grieving, give shelter to those who are away from their homes, and provide stability to those whose lives have been shaken to their roots.

Will you face the Center.

We look to the center, to the Spirit that is the source of our being. In this difficult time, let us remember that we are all children of God, held in connectedness and communion by the power of love. May the peace of God comfort us all, and may justice and clarity prevail.
